About OneCommunity's Network
OneCommunity’s first decade was devoted to building and expanding a state-of-the-art fiber optic network for the benefit of Northeast Ohio’s schools, hospitals, and government organizations.
In 2015, Everstream, the for-profit arm of OneCommunity, received a $50 million investment providing capital for expansion, customer acquisition and the retirement of existing debt. This investment allowed for Everstream to take control of the fiber network. OneCommunity retained a minority interest in Everstream and is receiving funds to support mission-related work going forward. The investment allows OneCommunity to focus on extending its mission to grow a digital economy and improve the quality of life in Northeast Ohio.
OneCommunity has been investing in Northeast Ohio for over a decade through a number of local and federal grants. According to OneCommunity CEO Lev Gonick,
“This transaction allows OneCommunity to leverage the fiber network as a catalyst for growth and an asset upon which to shape a civic agenda around community and business technology priorities in Northeast Ohio. OneCommunity is well-positioned for years to come in our pursuit of a robust digital economy across Northeast Ohio, and this deal represents the next stage of evolution for our organization.”
The team that provides day-to-day support to all of the existing customers and network operations will be part of Everstream going forward. Certain customer contracts and fiber assets will remain with OneCommunity and be managed by Everstream under a five year services agreement.
Fiber-optic technology is the currency of now. Its advantages over copper wire or coaxial cable technology are numerous. These include extremely low latency, ultra-high bandwidth, and symmetrical upload and download speeds. We can customize bandwidth to an organization’s specific needs from 10 Mbps to 40 Gbps. With fiber-optic technology, customers get their own dedicated fiber line to the internet eliminating traffic congestion commonly found with copper and coaxial networks. In short, fiber can future-proof a company’s network.
OneCommunity is a locally based, nonprofit, open broadband network provider that provides a wide range of public-private service options with unparalleled flexibility and cost savings. Thanks to our state-of-the-art fiber-based network, we can offer customized bandwidth options to fit a business’ unique needs. We’re uniquely positioned to meet diverse connectivity needs.
In addition to owning and operating our own high-speed fiber network, OneCommunity works with other community partners to create custom network solutions that fit organizations’ requirements. Thanks to our third-party provider management, we take the complexity out of the buying decision by aggregating and translating the purchase of broadband circuits, bandwidth and services into a simple managed network solution. No matter the size or complexity, the OneCommunity team is equipped to deliver broadband service that organizations need to succeed.
OneCommunity uses top-quality equipment and provides subscribers access to superior broadband network services. Our open network architecture is capable of providing Northeast Ohio institutions with dark fiber / wave, Ethernet and IP-based service interconnection to any on-net or upstream provider location.
OneCommunity’s broadband network allows organizations to operate a converged IP network capable of delivering robust voice, video, and data services at speeds from 10 Mbps to 40 Gbps without sacrificing security or architectural flexibility. Our customized network service solutions enable greater flexibility and planning for future services that may not be available via other local networks.
As an open-network provider, OneCommunity provides its broadband subscriber’s access to any one or multiple upstream providers, ensuring that your network can take advantage of the latest, most cost-effective services.
Our ultra-high speed broadband network uses a high-capacity, high-performance dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system, allowing “out-of-the-box” capacity of 88 Lambda channels, scalable to 160 channels. The network also uses multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) on its entire backbone to the customer edge, providing maximum reliability and-end to-end service-level management.
The foundation of our core network is fiber-ring architecture, providing diversity and reliability with multiple interconnected gateways that have the ability to provide from 320 gb/s to more than 64 Tb/s of switching capacity per gateway.
OneCommunity’s Network Operations Center (NOC) is at the heart of the OneCommunity network and represents the face of our organization to our customers. The NOC monitors, manages, and maintains visibility and control over the entire network to ensure it is operating at peak efficiency 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
OneCommunity has begun updating our Network Monitoring Systems (NMS) to be more intuitive and predictive in an effort to better respond to and more quickly resolve potential challenges our customers may experience. We are empowerinig our customers with similar NMS functionality to allow them to self-manage their network performance and also complete simple systems requests such as DNS changes.
When contacting the NOC, every subscriber receives a standard trouble ticket number and is provided with updates and escalation according to individualized “best-in-class” service-level agreements. Subscribers are also provided with access to a service portal that provides real-time trouble ticket status. Our NOC uses the latest incident and network management systems to detect, diagnose and resolve network performance issues and outages.
