Thomas A. Waltermire is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Geon Company (NYSE: GON, $1.3 billion revenue) and PolyOne Corporation (NYSE: POL, $4 billion revenue) both headquartered near Cleveland, Ohio. PolyOne is the world’s largest formulator and distributor of plastic materials and was formed when The Geon Company acquired M.A. Hanna Corporation in September, 2000. PolyOne has manufacturing operations in more than 30 countries and markets its products in numerous others.
Tom joined BFGoodrich in Akron 1974 in corporate treasury. He held a variety of general management and financial management positions with BFGoodrich Corporate HQ (Akron) and Chemical Division (Cleveland). He served as Vice President and Exec Assistant to Chairman/CEO John Ong 1989-1993.
When The Geon Company was taken public from BFG in 1993, Tom became CFO and ultimately Chairman/CEO of in 1999. The following year Geon acquired MA Hanna to create PolyOne. Tom served as PolyOne Chairman/CEO through 2005, a record earnings year for PolyOne.
In March 2006, Tom joined Team Northeast Ohio, serving as CEO until December 2014. Team NEO is a nonprofit business attraction and growth organization. Team NEO markets the 18 counties of Northeast Ohio to the world, attracts new businesses and supports local economic development partners to help existing companies grow. Team NEO is the Northeast Ohio regional partner for JobsOhio, the State’s economic development organization. From 2007-2014 Team NEO attracted over 100 new business operations to NEOhio, representing 9000 new jobs.
Currently, Tom serves as Chairman of the Board of Vadxx Energy (first plant being built in Akron), and on the boards of: Flow Polymers (a Cleveland-based mid-sized rubber chemicals company), Albrecht, Inc (associated with Acme Fresh Markets) and three early stage companies based in NEOhio.
Waltermire’s active engagement in economic development of Northeast Ohio and the State of Ohio includes having served on the executive committees and boards of Cleveland Tomorrow, the Greater Cleveland Partnership, JumpStart, Inc., the Ohio Business Roundtable and as Chair of NorTech (NEO’s regional technology consortium). Today Tom serves as a member of the Boards of ideastream, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Deaconess Foundation, Business Volunteers Unlimited (former chair), Baldwin Wallace University and Global Cleveland. Tom is the founding Chair of the Ohio Polymer Strategy Council/Polymer Ohio and has been appointed by Governors Taft, Strickland and Kasich to Ohio’s Third Frontier Advisory Board, the State’s initiative in technology-based economic development.
